The home of classic jazz
What is your favourite jazz album ?
Since the 1950's, Jazz has been influenced by a number of classic albums. Not always the biggest sellers, but albums that offered something different and took the music in a new direction. For example, Sonny Rollins 1956 album "Saxophone Colossus" is widely considered a masterpiece that continues to influenced musicians today.
"In twelve short years, Bobby Timmons created a musical catalogue which rivals that of some of the most influential and prolific artists in jazz."
Timmons was one of many musicans who graduated from the Art Blakey "jazz school" and went on to compose one of the greatest jazz tunes of all time "Moaning" in 1958. The composition also featured on his first album as leader called "This Here Is Bobby Timmons", released on Riverside in 1960. The album was a highlight in an all too brief career which ended before he reached the age of 40. Timmons never managed to recapture the success he had in the early 1960's his style of playing helped generate the gospel-tinged "soul jazz" style of popular during the 1950's and early '60s.
